GAINESVILLE, FL (352today.com) — Gainesville’s Regional Transit System (RTS) is adjusting dozens of bus routes following a new contract with the University of Florida (UF), which is reducing its financial support for public transit.

The changes, effective June 30 with the start of UF’s Summer B term, reflect a $2.9 million drop in funding as the university shifts to more campus-specific options like the Campus Connector shuttle.

“We’ve worked hard to protect our public transit system,” said Mayor Harvey L. Ward. “To minimize impact to the many in our community who rely on RTS, we’ve listened to concerns and worked with the university to keep the routes and stops that matter most.”

What’s Changing

New or Restored Service:

  • Route 126 – Weekend-only service added (Sat/Sun, 11 a.m.–7 p.m.)

Routes Eliminated:

  • Route 16 – Merged into Route 17
  • Route 34 – Absorbed by Route 12
  • Route 35 – Absorbed by Routes 12 and 37
  • Route 711 – Absorbed by Route 11

Major Route Changes:

  • Routes 1, 3, 6, 7, 12, 13, 17, 20, 23, 33, 75
    (realignments, schedule changes, or consolidations)

Minor Changes (Schedule/Frequency Only):

  • Routes 5, 8, 9, 11, 15, 26, 37, 38, 43

No Summer B Service:

  • Routes 21, 28, 46, 76, 78
  • UF Campus Routes 118, 122, 127

No Changes:

  • Routes 10, 52

Commitment to Community Access

Despite reduced funding, city leaders say RTS will continue providing reliable service for all residents — not just UF students.

“RTS is continuing to actively seek federal and state grant opportunities, as well as innovative collaborations,” said City Manager Cynthia W. Curry.

Expanded Mobility on Demand in East Gainesville

RTS also continues its Mobility on Demand (MOD) program — offering free, door-to-door rides for residents needing help reaching clinics, libraries, and other essential services.

New MOD hours:

  • Morning: 5:45–8:30 a.m.
  • Afternoon/Evening: 3:45–7:15 p.m.

Popular MOD destinations:

  • UF Health Urgent Care – Eastside
  • Florida Dept. of Health – Alachua
  • Family Resource Center
  • Cone Park Branch Library
