OCALA, FL (352today.com) – The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) says it’s investigating a deadly shooting as a possible “Stand Your Ground” case.

MCSO says deputies responded to a shooting call on Tuesday, Feb. 27, around 4:40 p.m. at a home in the 2700 block of SW 143rd Place Rd. in Ocala.

When they got there, deputies say they found 26-year-old John’L Davis shot.

Marion County Fire Rescue (MCFR) responded and transported Davis to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

Deputies say the shooting suspect remained on scene and was taken into custody when they arrived.

Detectives say they interviewed the suspect and released him because the shooting is being investigated as a possible Stand Your Ground incident.

The circumstances of the shooting are not clear right now. 352today has reached out to the sheriff’s office to get a better understanding of the case.

A spokesman for MCSO replied saying, “Due to the fact that this investigation is ongoing, we won’t be able to divulge specific information about the events that led up to the shooting.”

Florida law allows a person to use or threaten use deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it’s necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another. The law says the person has the right to stand his or her ground if the person using or threatening to use the deadly force is not engaged in a criminal activity and is in a place where he or she has a right to be.

This is a developing story. 352today will update it once we’ve gathered more information.
